Review: Darien Lake - May 28, 2011

Darien Lake Amusement Park, Darien Centre, NY

The day I learned that the world needs more Neon Trees.

The sprint to the front of the stage was only just the beginning! In the days
before the Neon Trees appearance at Darien Lake Amusement Park near Buffalo, NY
it had rained… and rained… the first 30 feet of lawn was pure mud (covered
in-between sound checks by park staff with bales of hay.) After some mud-soaked
spills, the crowd was as glad to see the sun come out as their beloved
musicians.

Even if the sun had not appeared, there was plenty of shining on the stage
thanks to the dynamic performance by the Neon Trees.

The Neon Trees demonstrated that they have a rarely seen depth of musical skill
and talent. A full, but clean sound from guitar and bass; a drummer that not
only has mad skills, but a fantastic voice as well. The group has a good range
of sounds and styles that buck the trend away from a ‘formula sound’ trap that
several new groups seem to fall into.

The band reached out and connected with the audience both metaphorically and
literally as Tyler shocked the park’s security staff and thrilled the mud-soaked
fans as he crawled down from the stage and sang his way through the front row of
fans.

I have been to literally dozens and dozens of concerts by a wide variety of
musicians and styles of music and I can easily say that precious few of them put
on a show with as much heart - and Tyler Glenn’s personal brand of fun/crazy
energy. The chemistry, talent, and energy from the Neon Trees was very
infectious and brought a huge smile to the faces of all who were there and had
me asking my wife when they will be performing again near enough for us to go
see them again. Truly the music industry, and indeed the world, needs more Neon
Trees.
