Glowing Strong

Two songs shoehorned between 22 commercials is hardly entertaining, unless of course, one of the songs is by Utah’s Neon Trees. No stranger to supportive airplay, the band’s single, “Animal,” is a fine, catchy example of radio’s (struggling) potential for influence and support. With “Animal” in steady rotation, and tours with bands like My Chemical Romance and Thirty Seconds To Mars checked off of their to do list, Neon Trees have taken quite nicely to their successes.

TNT Down Under Interview with Neon Trees

Utah-based alt rockers Neon Trees first rose to prominence when the Killers hand-picked them as touring buddies a few years back. Nowadays, however, they’re big in their own right. Last year’s debut album, Habits, was a hit, as was the massive single “Animal”. Currently in the US after a UK tour, they’re in Australia next week, so we called up singer Tyler Glenn.

Neon Trees interview

Neon Trees is the latest band that seem determined to rescue power pop from extinction and they’re showing no sign of quitting the bubblegum pop-sphere. Habits, so far the only studio album from the Utah-based rock quartet peaked on Billboard’s Alternative Rock Chart with the hit single ‘Animal’, also featured in an episode of popular TV series Glee.

The New Rocker - With Not Much Hair

But this might be too good an opportunity to miss. Although I knew nothing of the band, I figured they must be good to be invited all the way from Utah to Singapore for a paid concert in the park. I googled "Neon Trees", watched a YouTube of its performance and decided to garner the energy.

I did not regret one bit...

Why Neon Trees' singer loves Glee

Growing up, Neon Trees frontman Tyler Glenn had what you might call a "Billy Elliot complex".

Glenn, 28, loved performing as a child, and began taking dance lessons at the age of four.

But, like the fictional Elliot, his hobby made him the subject of bullying in school. It got so bad that he abandoned his passion at age 12.

Neon Treats

If you only know American rock band Neon Trees from watching their music videos or YouTube posts of their live shows, then you only know half the story, says lead singer Tyler Glenn.

The band has, in the past year, made headlines not just with their songs that have oh-so-singable choruses and hummable riffs like Animal, 1983 and In The Next Room, but also with their distinctive, almost New Wave look.

Q&A: Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees talks Music Inspiration

They quickly discovered their common goal, “to evoke a larger-than-life feel,” as Tyler puts it, “even if we’re playing to 10 people in a garage. We’re just trying to keep our feet on the ground and remember why we started doing this in the first place.”
